New research reveals that people who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users purchasing such medications should be aware of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the medication ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a return to starting mass within about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally see a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Doctors propose the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the medication report a powerful return of cravings.
"It felt as if something that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," recalled one woman.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing lifestyle management.
